Building our country’s image

Posted by on 29/04/2014

Harta României. România's map

One of the most debated subjects in Romanian media, is the image of România and how is it built by the authorities.

But I come now in front of you and ask a question:

ARE WE STILL BOUND BY WHAT THE GOVERNMENTS DO OR FAIL TO DO?

We live now in an informational era, wether we like it or else.

Blogging, went far from being a hobby and even in Romania, it became a full-time job and in some cases, grew into a business.

I have my own projects running on the Romanian market and I know many people that are above me so after 7 years of blogging, I think that I can state that clearly: blogging IS a Home Business.

We now live in a complex environnement, where INFORMATION is probably the most produced, marketed and consumed product. I think that if I say that 90% of all merchandise flowing through the economc channels IS INFORMATION, I’m pretty close to the statistics.

Under such circumstances, there is a question that arises in front of each citizen of whatever country:

AM I REFLECTING MY COUNTRY AS IT IS? AS WE ARE?

Are you amazed by this question? Well, you SHOULD BE!

The 20-th century, set us up for a different media. And when I say “media”, I mean INFORMATIONAL ENVIRONNEMENT. While in the 19-th century we had newspapers, magazines and telegraph and this was the dominating media, the 20-th century brought forward the TV and radio, which turned upsidedown everything we knew about media and spreading information.

By that time however, the common citizen was relying in what was concerning the public image of the country on the official channels: External Affairs Ministry and the government “official” channels.

Things have dramatically changed since.

The impact of TV and radio, even if they were interests driven, politically enrolled and even more, enslaved as it was in all communist countries, made more and more people aware of the fact that WE HAVE OUR OWN RIGHTS. Freedom of speech, may look now obsolete if we speak of it.

Was it really so obsolete 50 years ago?

I doubt it. And even if I narrow the range of decades to 30 years, and even worse, ONLY to 20 years, we still have a huge amount of slavery and enrollement in media. We still have it TODAY.

My question is:

DO WE HAVE TO KEEP IT LIKE THIS?

Do I enjoy slavery of any kind?

Do I have a blog?

Am I writing for the whole world?

What is the image I am projecting worldwide?

Those were the questions that drove me when I wrote “Re-start from scratch”.

Back in 2013, I was still living in Greece, Thessaloniki. I attended in may 2013 at the First Thessaloniki Blogmeet, which was an event organized to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the already world acclaimed CMS platform, WordPress.

It was for the first time in my life when I realised that THE IMAGE OF MY COUNTRY, LIES IN MY HANDS.

I am responsible of how ROMÂNIA looks worldwide. YOU ARE TOO! The image of YOUR COUNTRY, LIES IN YOUR HANDS!

Any choices?

Yes. Burry your head in the sand. Any storm should pass someday. Eventually…
